Rwampara Woman MP Asiimwe Stands Down for NRM Candidate
Rwampara District Woman MP Molly Asiimwe Musiime has withdrawn from the 2026 parliamentary race after a private meeting with First Lady Janet Museveni, leaving the contest between NRM flagbearer Annah Kansiime and detained NUP candidate Sarah Kinconco.

The Rwampara District Woman Member of Parliament, Molly Asiimwe Musiime, has withdrawn from the 2026 parliamentary race, despite having been nominated as an independent candidate in October.

Asiimwe’s decision followed a private meeting with First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni at the Irenga State Lodge in Ntungamo.

During a brief ceremony at her home in Rugando, Rwampara District, Asiimwe said it was time for her to take a break and endorsed the NRM flagbearer, Annah Kansiime.

“When Maama asked me, I told her that Rwampara people call me ‘Maama Rwampara,’ what she asked for, I had to offer. She taught and made me love politics,” Asiimwe said.

She urged residents to support Kansiime, framing her withdrawal as an opportunity for unity and fresh leadership.

“When something fails, you let go. As born-again Christians, we repent. I am sure Annah will also get time and serve. Let us unite and give her a chance to serve. I can serve you even when I am not a member of parliament,” Asiimwe said.

Kansiime thanked Asiimwe for stepping aside, noting that her withdrawal avoided a potential conflict between supporters of the two candidates.

“I want to thank Hon. Molly for accepting to leave the race. It is good that what we agreed upon has been fulfilled, and we can reconcile. I also request her, since she is Maama Rwampara, to guide me whenever I seek advice,” Kansiime said.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, who officiated the event, acknowledged reports of irregularities in the Rwampara NRM primaries, which led to Asiimwe’s independent candidacy.

“Contesting as an independent points out challenges within the party. It is only the government that can offer services, but what your leaders have is their voice. For the government to listen, it starts with your relationship with the NRM,” Tayebwa said.

He confirmed the meeting between the candidates and the First Lady, noting that Asiimwe had been advised to follow NRM principles while continuing to serve the people in other capacities.

“The First Lady reminded her of their 15-year journey and how it is dangerous for her to be stained because of being an independent candidate. We have a plan for her to serve the people of Rwampara and agreed she should leave the race,” Tayebwa said.

Asiimwe’s withdrawal leaves the parliamentary race in Rwampara between NRM flagbearer Annah Kansiime and National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Sarah Kinconco, who is currently on remand at Mbarara Main Prison after being arrested alongside 37 other NUP supporters during a political convoy on November 7, 2025.
